By 1870 the Mazurka, Schottische and Polka began to fade as popular dances. Middle class public balls saw dances dwindle to just two: the Waltz and Two-Step. The original two-step evolved allowing people to dance to John Phillip Sousa – type march beat. By the end of the century dancers were ready for something completely different. The early 1900s were seen as a time when people began to find it "modern" to dance their Two-Step to the new Ragtime tempo. I offer you another variation.

Hop step first. Start with your left foot then walk forward four

Once the basic steps are down, the rest is easier still
Repeat them right side, left side once, use bounce and sway to fill
There is a "marking time" before you reach the first repeat
Move your hips north, east, south, west to the funky beat

Now you're gonna show your stuff
And how! So simple, hardly rough.

It's not just exercise
